What do Chiropractors do?

The short answer is – I help folks with pain feel better.  Plain and simple.

How I do that is a longer answer, and likely what you are interested in knowing!

My first step with any person with pain is to ASSESS the situation.  As a chiropractic doctor,  I am highly trained to figure out what is causing that pain.  I’ll take a thorough history, and then perform a physical exam, to establish what is the likely cause of the pain, and to generate options that address it.

Once I have an understanding through my assessment, I will suggest a plan of care, or Chiropractic Treatment.

Chiropractic treatment:

Before we get into the specifics, lets first talk about movement.  Have you heard the quote ‘movement is medicine’? For the most part this is true. Movement helps tissues in a variety of ways.  It can relax surrounding muscles, and encourage circulation to the local tissues.  It also can reduce local inflammation.

Chiropractic treatment reintroduces movement to your spine, in a therapeutic way, that in turn encourages blood flow to those areas of pain, bringing nutrients and oxygen, and removing inflammation. Chiropractic adjustments bring movement to the joints treated, and we think this is why it reduces pain.

In some cases, you might find that your day to day movement can be quite painful, or make you feel worse.  This is why you see a professional, so we can ensure we approach movement in a safe, and effective way – turning painful movement into therapeutic movement.

Typically, an adjustment (spinal manipulative therapy) will be used. To prepare for the treatment, I show you what the adjustment will be like before treating.  Spinal Manipulaiton is a great tool used to get your joints moving.   However I have many more tools than that.

For those individuals who prefer not to be adjusted, I  have other ways of getting movement through the joints and muscles that I am able to demonstrate.  I work with you to ensure you receive the care you prefer.

Resilience through movement

Our bodies are resilient, but sometimes they need help. As a former professional lacrosse player, Chiropractic helped my recovery and injury prevention by keeping my joints free from restrictions and moving freely. There were lots of times during the season that my back was in pain and would stop me from being able to do daily activities like clean my apartment, cook dinner or even drive. Fortunately for me, I found Chiropractic and it changed my life. It allowed me to bounce back and perform my favorite activities and complete those chores without needing to say “I can’t today, my back hurts too much.”
