Technology supported recovery – creating a Circle of Care.

CCMI’s software program is specifically designed for concussion management clinics to provide full baseline and post-injury testing programs.  This program connects with the CCMI Concussion Tracker Smartphone App, which allows for concussion reporting and communication with patients, as well as their coaches, trainers, and teachers to provide a full comprehensive circle of care.

The CCMI Concussion Tracker smartphone app is an easy-to-use app that supports safer return-to-sport decisions for young athletes as well as return-to-work and return-to-learn decisions for anyone with a concussion.

You can read more about the app and download it here.

What can I expect when receiving concussion care at Acacia Health?

What is the general process for concussion care?

  1. Initial Assessment – This 75 minute session with our Lead Concussion Clinician will involve a thorough history, physical assessment, and standardized tests to fully evaluate your specific needs and concerns.
  2. 30 minute Treadmill Test – This is typically scheduled within a week after your initial visit.  The reason for this test is to help determine the nature of your concussion and assess your ability to return to work/sport safely
  3. Treatment sessions with appropriate professionals –  You may only need to see the Lead Clinician, or they may recommend you consult with other concussion team members and supports. At times we may refer you to a professional in the community who provides highly specialized assessment and treatment.
  4. Baseline Testing after Recovery – Performing a baseline test 2-3 months after your concussion has resolved is recommended for folks who work/play in environments/sports that increase their concussion risk.

FAQ

What is a concussion?

A concussion is a brain injury caused by acceleration or deceleration of the brain within the skull following a significant impact to the head or elsewhere on the body. The impact causes a biochemical imbalance within the brain cells, resulting in decreased blood flow and temporary energy deficits within the brain. Symptoms may include loss of consciousness, headache, pressure in the head, neck pain, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, or balance problems, among others.

At Acacia, we offer concussion treatment services & strategies including:

During the early stage following injury, a period of relative symptom limited physical and cognitive rest is recommended. Research suggests 24 to 48 hours, however, these decisions are made on a case-by-case basis.

Following a short period of rest, the International Consensus Statement on Concussion in Sport (2016) recommends a gradual increase in mental and physical activity, supervised by a licensed healthcare practitioner trained in concussion management.
