Better Control, Better Quality of Life
If you are experiencing changes in bladder control — leakage, sudden urgency, difficulty urinating — you are not alone. Bladder control issues are more common than most people realize, affecting people of all ages and activity levels.
The good news: these symptoms can often be significantly reduced or even eliminated through physiotherapy targeted to the pelvic floor. You don’t have to simply live with it.
Could This Be You?
Pelvic floor physiotherapy may be right for you if you experience any of the following:
- Stress incontinence: Urine leaks during physical activity — laughing, sneezing, coughing, or exercise
- Urgency: A sudden, intense need to reach the toilet quickly, sometimes with leakage before you get there
- Underactive bladder: A feeling that your bladder doesn’t fully empty when you urinate
- Bladder obstruction: Difficulty starting urination, or a weak or stop-and-start stream
- Overflow incontinence: The bladder stays overly full, causing urine to leak continuously or frequently
- Enuresis: Bedwetting or involuntary leakage during sleep
Why Does This Happen?
For men or assigned-male-bodies, bladder control issues can arise from a number of causes. Prostate conditions or surgery are among the most common triggers, but abdominal or pelvic surgery, neurological conditions, aging, physical deconditioning, and high-impact activity can all play a role. Sometimes there is no single clear cause — and that is okay. What matters is finding the right path forward.
The Role of the Pelvic Floor
Bladder control relies heavily on the pelvic floor — a group of muscles that act like a supportive hammock beneath the bladder and bowel, helping regulate urine flow and respond to physical demands.
When these muscles become weak, overly tight, fatigued, or poorly coordinated, leakage and urgency can follow. Sometimes the issue is not weakness at all, but timing — muscles that activate or release at the wrong moment.
A pelvic floor physiotherapist is specially trained to assess exactly what is happening with your pelvic floor muscles — and to build a treatment plan tailored to your specific situation.
A Personalized Path to Recovery
At Acacia Health, we take a client-centred approach. Every person’s anatomy, history, and goals are unique, and your care plan will reflect that. Here’s what the process typically looks like:
- Detailed Assessment: Your physiotherapist will take time to understand your symptoms, medical history, and lifestyle. A hands-on assessment determines how your pelvic floor is functioning — whether the issue is strength, coordination, tension, or something else.
- Exercise Training: You’ll learn how to effectively strengthen, relax, and coordinate your pelvic floor muscles. Exercises are specific to your assessment findings, not a one-size-fits-all approach.
- Education and Lifestyle Strategies: Small changes in fluid intake, bladder habits, and how you manage physical activities like lifting, coughing, or exercise can make a meaningful difference.
- Pre- and Post-Prostate Surgery Rehabilitation: If prostate surgery is part of your journey — whether planned or recent — pelvic floor physiotherapy can significantly support your recovery and help you regain bladder control more quickly.
You Don’t Have to Live With It
It can feel uncomfortable to bring up bladder issues — but rest assured, this is something we talk about every day. There is no judgment here, only support. Loss of bladder control is common, manageable, and often very treatable.
Taking the first step is the hardest part. Whether you’re ready to book an appointment or just have questions, we’re here to help you move toward greater confidence and quality of life.
