It is finally summertime, and with that comes strawberry season! There is nothing better than fresh, local strawberries when they are at their peak of sweetness and flavour.
The best part about this recipe is that you do not need an ice cream maker. All you need is a blender or food processor to create a refreshing frozen dessert that is perfect for cooling down on a hot summer day. Compared to many store-bought sorbets, this homemade version is lower in added sugar and made with simple ingredients.
I would recommend using strawberries when they are in season because they have more flavour, meaning you do not have to add too much sweetener. The basil adds a fresh flavour and pairs perfectly with the strawberries. This recipe is also dairy-free!
Why I love strawberries as a dietitian
Strawberries are not only delicious, but they also provide many important nutrients:
- Vitamin C: Strawberries are an excellent source of vitamin C, which supports immune function and helps with iron absorption
- Fibre: The fibre in strawberries can help regulate blood sugar levels and support digestion
- Folate: Strawberries contain folate, an important nutrient during pregnancy that helps support healthy fetal development
- Low in calories: Seven strawberries contain about 27 calories!

Assemble Time: 5 minutes
Difficulty: 1/3 – Medium
Ingredients
- 3 cups fresh or frozen strawberries
- 2 tbsp honey or maple syrup
- ¼ cup warm water

- ¼ cup fresh basil
Steps
- If using fresh strawberries, wash and cut them before placing them in a container to freeze until solid. This usually takes 1-2 hours, or you can freeze them overnight.
- Add the frozen strawberries to a food processor or blender and blend until smooth.
- Add the honey, warm water, lime juice, and basil. Blend again until smooth and creamy.
- For a softer sorbet texture, enjoy immediately. For a firmer texture, transfer to a freezer-safe container and freeze for another 1-2 hours, or until your desired consistency is reached.
This sorbet is a simple way to enjoy seasonal fruit while creating a dessert that feels both refreshing and satisfying!
