Learn More

A pessary is an internal vaginal device, made out of medical-grade silicone, used to support pelvic organs in individuals experiencing pelvic organ prolapse and/or stress urinary incontinence. They provide non-surgical symptom relief by supporting the vaginal walls, uterus, and bladder.

Pessaries come in all shapes and sizes, you will be fitted with the best pessary that meets your needs.

Acacia’s Pessary Services include:

  • Trustworthy resource to support you going forward
  • Initial consultation to discuss need and indication
  • Assessment and fitting to select the right pessary for you
  • Appointment for pessary placement
  • Ongoing maintenance (if needed)
  • Immediate relief of heaviness and bladder leakage
  • Minimal to no sensation when properly fitted
  • Often user-managed (insertion/removal)
  • May delay or avoid need for surgery

Important Note: Pessaries do not cure prolapse or incontinence—they provide support while in place.

FAQ

Some pessaries—like ring-style pessaries—can stay in during vaginal intercourse without causing discomfort, while others (like Gellhorn or cube types) need to be removed first. Your clinician will help you choose a type that suits your lifestyle and preferences.

Minor complications may include increased discharge, mild irritation, or spotting. More serious issues—like infections, ulcers, or erosion—are rare and typically occur if a pessary is left in too long without cleaning or follow-up care.

It depends on the type of pessary and whether you’re managing it yourself. Some people remove and clean it daily or weekly, while others leave it in for longer stretches and have it cleaned during scheduled visits—typically every 1 to 3 months.

Yes, pessaries should be replaced periodically, even with good care. On average, they last 1–2 years, but this can vary depending on the material, type, and usage.

If you do not see your extended benefits plan provider on this list, please contact them directly to confirm if you have dietitian coverage.

Many people can learn to manage their pessary independently with some instruction. However, some prefer or need assistance from a clinician.

Most people can continue regular physical activity, including walking, swimming, and low-impact exercise. High-impact or intense abdominal workouts may require a refit or a different pessary style to stay secure and comfortable.
