Learn More

Shockwave Therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses acoustic (sound) waves to promote healing and reduce pain in some musculoskeletal conditions, particularly in tendons, ligaments, and other connective tissues.

Even though the name implies it, no electrical current is used in this treatment, but rather acoustic waves.

Shockwave Therapy can help with:

  • Reduced pain
  • Improve mobility and function
  • Return to activity faster

Shockwave Therapy is an add-on treatment approach that can be included in your physiotherapy, chiropractic, or athletic therapy appointment. Each clinician incorporates Shockwave Therapy into their treatment planning in a unique way, and you can discuss your needs with our patient care coordinators to be directed to the best clinician.

Initial appointment – physiotherapy:
60 minutes

During this time your physiotherapist will:

  • Listen to your concerns and take a detailed health history
  • Do an in-depth assessment of your injury or pain
  • Discuss with you the indications for using Shockwave Therapy
  • Perform both conventional physiotherapy and Shockwave treatment
  • Suggest a treatment plan and prescribe appropriate homecare to work alongside your Shockwave treatments

Follow-up appointments – physiotherapy, chiropractic, athletic therapy
15 to 45 minutes

Appointments can be as short as 15 minutes for receiving only Shockwave Therapy. For appointments that include other treatment modalities, appointments range from 25 to 45 minutes.

You clinician will discuss treatment progress and make adjustments according to your results.

A Shockwave Therapy treatment plan often involves a series of treatments over the course of 4-8 weeks. Your clinician will work with you on what your treatment plan will look like.
